Kate is a widow with a young daughter. She’s lonely at times, but fears dating someone new. For one, she thinks she has nothing to offer anyone. Second, she struggles with the guilt of cheating on her deceased husband. That changes when her best friend drags her to a barbecue where she meets James, a handsome man who happens to be the first person to make her heart race since her husband. They click instantly; he captivates her in every way. And then he ruins it by revealing his profession:

He’s a cop.

To Kate, a police officer’s job is too risky. Out of fear of falling for him and losing him to his dangerous career, she stays reserved about settling into a relationship with him. After all, she wouldn’t be able to handle the loss of another love. But James doesn’t give up, and he endeavors to woo her into his arms.
