Her Darkness

“You carry your darkness the way some women wear an elegant black dress—effortlessly, and it gleams within those green eyes of yours.”
“Underestimating me will be anyone’s greatest mistake,” I tell him. “Never overlook a woman who can break spirits, reduce everything to ashes, and walk away without looking back. Never overlook the woman who gazes into the flames and smiles.”

He lifts my chin with a finger, his eyes locking with mine.
“If I didn’t know better, I might think you were afraid of me.”
There’s a hint of humor in my voice, and it surprises me that I’m letting him glimpse my emotions.
“Beautiful, yet destructive—that’s enough to bring down any man, Eloisa.”

I tilt my head slightly. “I used to be kind.”
